The non-profit Comprehensive Development Inc. partners with Manhattan Comprehensive Night and Day High School to give older, at-risk students access to critically-needed social services free of charge. ..and more.

How CDI Works

Ø      A Unique Community.Here older students get the rare chance to bond again with peers of similar age and life circumstance. Struggling with real adult needs, students soon discover an oasis of educational support and respect.

Ø      An Education for Life.CDI's goal is to help realize each student's capacities and potential.Our approach is one-to-one and deeply personal.We use learning to fundamentally transform what success can mean.

Ø      Key Partnerships. There are people and institutions who care deeply about our students. CDI capitalizes on the unique strength of hundreds of volunteers and associates to help make radical change in every student's life.

What CDI Provides

A wealth of student support services make real the chance for personal, academic, and professional success, including:

Ø      Tutoring . . .160 volunteers tutor over 270 students from 45 countries, speaking 32 languages.

Ø      Counseling . . .300 students a year speaking English, Spanish, Arabic, French, and Mandarin get help.

Ø      College and Career Services . . . Students receive assistance researching and applying to colleges. Those not continuing directly on to college are helped with part- or full-time job placement.

Ø      Legal Services and Homeless Prevention . . . Lawyers help with immigration, family law, and landlord/tenant disputes. We mediate and resolve family crises to keep students off the streets.

Ø      Health Care . . . An on-site health van provides exams, shots, and prenatal services. Students can also be referred to neighborhood hospitals and clinics.

How You Can Help

Because of CDI, 800 Manhattan Comprehensive students each year get the support and educational tools they critically need.

CDI has supported the school's expansion through a computer training facility and a state-of-the-art rooftop science lab. Future plans include expansion of job and college programs, as well as scholarships.
